Having trouble deciding which of these camcorders to go for. I may add a bit more memory though for processing longer clips. I have upgraded my machine to Intel Q6600 quad core overclocked to 3GHz and 2GB of fast memory and it runs nicely, processing in real time. I was running an Athlon 3000+ with 1.5GB of ram which was fairly spritely for most things however any processing/editing of AVCHD just made it crawl. I think that your computer will struggle. TMPGenc 4.0 Xpress will conveniently convert directly from AVCHD HD resolution down to mpeg2 720x576 resolution which is what DVD uses. I find that it is easiest to convert the AVCHD output into some more common format using mts2avi on my Linux box or the excellent TMPGenc 4.0 Xpress and then you can use any editor. So you can see that there are a lot of software issues. Adobe has just announced a new version of Premiere Elements that will handle AVCHD but I don't think that it is due out until well into October. Adobe Premiere and Premiere Elements just don't do AVCHD.

I believe that Pinnacle will process AVCHD but there is no trial so I haven't tried it. Sony Vegas 8 Platinum does a good job with output in 50i mode but falls over if 25pf mode is used (and that gives better results). I can't get the supplied editing software (a Ulead app) to work on any machine.
